Lisbon is a light-filled, exciting, colorful city with large squares and parks, where every single corner tells a story. The city is divided into 7 hills where you can find the oldest neighborhoods, some are very famous, other are fancier, inspired in Paris. The sun is everlastingly present, as well as the whitewashed cobblestone streets, the gardens and al fresco terraces, and the Castle up above. From the many viewpoints, the silvery Tagus river dazzles us, and the bridge and the Cristo Rei almost leaves us baffled.

Lisbon’s history is vast and rich. It is impossible to visit it and not speak of Romans, Moors, the Discoveries, and earthquakes, which changed it forever in the 18th century. A city that has a lot to see in the streets, the museums (some of which are quite special), and the surrounding towns, which we will not forget in this journey.

For lovers of surf, the beach, wine, gastronomy, beaches and the ocean, Lisbon is the perfect destination.

Porto, known worldwide for the famous wine that got its name from it, is quite different. In fact, one of Portugal’s most surprising traits is how a country so small and with such a strong identity is able to be as diverse as it is, from one region to the other.

Porto spreads between the Douro river, its mouth and the Atlantic Ocean. The Ribeira neighborhood, the oldest one in the city, is located in the riverbank and a miscellany of colorful granite houses, going up narrow streets all the way to the cathedral, in the upper part of town. On the other bank of the river are the old cellars where the Port wine is kept, before it is exported to the rest of the world.

Porto’s history has been always connected to church and trade, and that is why there are a few buildings standing out from the others, like the Clérigos Tower, the incredible St. Francis Church, and the Palácio da Bolsa. In the 20th century, Porto was the backdrop for a wonderful modern movement in architecture, and important names came out of it, like Siza Vieira and Souto de Moura. The city has changed, and new modern neighborhoods have emerged, with ample, breezy spaces.

One of the most romantic cities in Europe, its gardens with trees and plants coming from the five continents, the fairy-tale palaces, everything carries us to a time when beauty and harmony were the main focus.

Private visit to the Pena Palace or the National Palace.

After that, free time to walk around the village and roaming the typical streets and try the delicious travesseiros. The driver and the car are always at your disposal, so you can choose one of the romantic gardens in Sintra or one of the beaches to have lunch. When returning to Lisbon, you must stop in Cabo da Roca, the most western point in mainland Europe, and Guincho, one of the most beautiful beaches in Lisbon’s coastline. The last stop is Cascais, an elegant, cosmopolitan seaside village.

DAY 4 – ÉVORA

On this day, we suggest a trip down to Évora, an historic city a little over 1 hour on the highway. Our guide is a former History teacher and he will take you on a walk around the historic center. Évora has been an important city since the Roman Empire, becoming later a Muslim city, then a noteworthy Jewish synagogue, and in the 16th century it received the second university in Portugal. Nowadays, this region is fueled by the lovely wines and olive oils it produces, so we will take you on a guided visit to one of the region’s wine producers.

Return to Lisbon in the evening.

DAY 5 – NORTH BOUND

Private transfer to Porto about 3 hours away by car from Lisbon.

Coimbra is located between Porto and Lisbon, a town with the oldest university in the country. You definitely should stop here to see one of the loveliest libraries in the world.

Its architecture, conception, the massive rosewood bookcases, the lush decoration — every detail is a sight for sore eyes. And since we are so close, why not have lunch in one of Bairrada’s restaurants where you can eat the best roasted piglet in the country.

Arrival at Porto in the evening and check-in.

Accommodation: Pestana Vintage Porto. Located in the Ribeira neighborhood, alongside the Douro river, this is a unique hotel with a splendid setting and amazing atmosphere.

DAY 6

Our guide will be waiting for you for a walking tour in the historic part of town: old neighborhoods, stories about the river, which would overflow every winter, the ironclad bridges, the funicular, and the churches hiding beautiful treasures.

After crossing the river in a water taxi, we suggest a visit to one of the cellars to taste the delicious Port wine. For dinner, we will book a table in one of the best restaurants in town close to your hotel.

DAY 7

With car and driver, we will do a panoramic tour across town, before we head up to Guimarães, the birthplace of the Portuguese nationality. The historic center, dating from the medieval period, is one of the most well-preserved in the country. The Ducal Palace and the traditional embroidery and pottery are also great things to see. If you prefer to see art, we suggest a visit to the José Guimarães International Arts Center with interesting African, pre-Colombian, Old Chinese, and Modern Art collections, with artwork from Portuguese artist José Guimarães, which is where the name of the center comes from.

You have got many possibilities for lunch, one of which has been recently awarded with a Michelin star, A Cozinha by António Loureiro.

On the way to Porto, lose yourself in the romantic garden of Quinta da Aveleda. This private manor has a wonderfully big park filled with romantic hidden spots, chalets, lakes, enormous trees and luxurious, carefully groomed gardens, as if they were a family jewel. Quinta da Aveleda is one of the most important Vinho Verde wine producers, a unique wine, making it possible for a tour in the vineyards as well and tasting some of the precious wines.

Return to Porto in the evening.

DAY 8

We leave this day free so that you can stroll around and enjoy the city. Perhaps a visit to the Serralves Foundation or the Soares dos Reis Museum, or get to know the Casa da Música inside, an iconic building in Porto built by Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas. Or just take the tram which will take you towards the river, from Ribera to the elegant Foz neighborhood, and relax in one of the al fresco terraces overlooking the beach.

DAY 9

Coming to Porto and not spend at least one day in the Douro Valley doesn’t even feel right. Your car will pick you up to take you to the Douro Valley, about 50 miles from Porto. Here you will find the many wineries producing Port wine, but also some of the most renowned Douro table wine. The first stop will be at one of those wineries for a visit and tasting. Walk down to the river banks where a boat awaits you for a 1-hour private cruise to the DOC Restaurant, one of the best restaurants in Portugal, for a relaxed gourmet lunch of traditional local food.

After lunch, the driver will wait for you for a stroll around the picturesque Pinhão village and take you to another winery for a visit and tasting, before getting back to Porto.
