Popular Saints’ Festivals
June is the month of celebrations and festivities!
In Lisbon the celebrations of Saint Anthony are on the 12nd and 13rd of June.
In Alfama, Graça, Bica, Mouraria and Bairro Alto, people eat cabbage soup and grilled sardines, dance and sing popular songs throughout the night. Also on the evening of 12 of June happens a popular march along Avenida da Liberdade.
Saint Anthony was always highly respected, worshipped and treated as a true patron of the city.
During the whole month of June, in Lisbon’s traditional neighborhoods, you will find many popular festivities with popular dance music and open air restaurants.
In Porto, the Saint John’s Eve is celebrated on the night of 23.
The festival is also very traditional but has some other habits and customs, such as, beat each other on the head with a plastic hammer, firework at midnight on the River Douro and release colourful hot air balloons into the sky.
During the afternoon, thousands of people pay a tribute to Saint John and end the night on the beach, waiting for the sunrise. Some of them, also have the courage to take an early morning dip into the sea.
